Who's Hungry?

It's that time of year again, so we made our yearly trip down to see the artificial salmon run at the fish hatchery. One of Wynn's favorite words is fishy, so he was having a blast. Currently the chum salmon are running here, however the locals or salmon snobs as I've dubbed them consider these beasts of the species to be only worthy of dog food and consider it disgusting to cook one. We haven't actually tasted to all four kinds of salmon to see if they are correct. Whose hungry for dinner? Thousands of fish for the taking right offshore from this fish hatchery!
Sorry about the videos... someone needed to say SLOW DOWN TIGER when I was filming!

Fourth of July

The pictures explain it all, but this year we flew with the company to Tenakee, Alaska via seaplane to celebrate the Fourth of July. A small town of about 60 people, a fishing village, and a community hot spring/bath house are what keep this place on the map. I think it will probably become our annual tradition because we all had such a good time. I had never experienced "small town America" quite like this. A tiny parade, pinata, foot races, "fishing" for toys, slug slinging, good food, and the genuine place and people made it a winner. My only regrets are that they ran out of Salmonberry ice cream after our second round and that I didn't bring a bucket to pick the hordes of ripe red, orange, and yellow salmonberries that were all around. I'll know better next year!

I promise they are not raspberries and they taste very different!

Afternoon hops

We've been branching out this summer and visiting some other Southeast Alaskan cities. We visited Skagway a month ago and had dinner and hike the Lower Dewey Trail. It was a fun little hike, but intense!... and I shouldn't have done it with my foot injury - lesson learned :/. There are several other things we'd like to do in Skagway, so we hope to get back this summer again. Last week, we flew over to Gustavus one afternoon. We know several families who live in Gustavus and run fishing operations over the summer, so we met up with a friend who gave us a tour, we went to the beach, and then a short boat ride while our friend set a buoy for the next day's trip. Gustavus is only about 10 miles from Glacier Bay, one of Alaska' top attractions, so we'll definitely be visiting Gustavus more often. Its only a 25 minute flight! For the Fourth of July, weather permitting, we're going over to Tenakee Springs in one of Andy's work's seaplanes. It will be my and the kids first seaplane ride, so that's exciting. I guess its tradition to go over there to the little festival and have a big company BBQ every year at Alaska Seaplanes. We've never gone before, so we signed up this year for a ride over. Lastly, in a few weekends we'll fly over to Haines for the Southeast Alaska state fair. It's hard to imagine how close all the other towns are to us since we can't drive there, but being able to fly really puts things in perspective. I think there are about 8 little towns within an hours flight of Juneau, so we have a lot more exploring to do!

Above: Sea lion waiting for the halibut carcasses to be tossed aside after the sport fishing boats came in for the day. I didn't get a great pic, but it came much closer to the docks and both kids could see him very well!
